Why we are worth it.

So I just got a message through the super cool message service on my fancy new website. Have I mentioned how much I love my new website? Well, I do! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

OK, I’m getting off topic. The message was from someone questioning our prices. I will admit, we aren’t the cheapest wedding photographers out there, but I stand by our pricing. I have a lovely Excel worksheet that breaks down all of our costs and a fabulous formula that helped me determine our price. It’s pretty darn scientific. At Rebecca Claire Photography, I really want to concentrate on the fine art of wedding photography. We aren’t a couple of kids who just got Rebel XTi’s for Christmas and thought we’d start shooting weddings for a bit of extra spending money. We have been doing this for years and have taken that time to truly hone our craft. I could have been all snooty and said something along the lines of “blah blah, you must not be our customer, blah blah” like those ladies in Pretty Woman, but that’s so not me. Obviously, this person doesn’t understand why we are worth what we are worth, and so I have taken the opportunity to educate. Of course, once I finished the email, I was so pleased with how well I really got to the heart of why I believe we are worth it, that I thought “I have got to share this with my fabulous blog readers who are wonderful and intelligent and generally all around fabulous.” (Really! You know you are) So below is my email response:

With Rebecca Claire Photography you aren’t just getting wedding photographers. We are trained artists with degrees in our fields from four-year accredited art schools. Our package includes unlimited time on your wedding day. We are there as soon as you desire, be it right as you wake up or after breakfast, and we don’t leave until you tell us you are ready for us to go. After your wedding, we personally edit and retouch each image. We do not send this important work out to a company or individual who was not at the event and has no idea what happened and who are your important friends and family. On average, for every shooting hour, we have five hours of editing and retouching. We limit our bookings each year so that each wedding receives the attention it deserves both pre and post wedding day. Because we handle the images from start to finish, we can guarantee the highest degree of quality and craft.

We also include an “everything” album which includes every image from your wedding with the individualized care we give to each image leaving our studio. The 100 5x7s are delivered in a custom made hardwood box created by a local wood artist, and the large print or canvas is an heirloom treasure, printed archivally to last for generations. With online ordering, your friends and family can view and order prints directly from us. The stress of making sure each person gets the prints they desire is lifted so you can enjoy your images after your wedding worry-free.

Of course, if you like our style but $20,000 is not within your budget, we have a sister photography company, Pellucid Photography, for our trained associates. Each associate works with us both at events and in classes and no associate is sent out on their own until we are satisfied with their competency, artistry and ability to manage the stress of wedding photography. Pellucid Photography is completely customizable with packages starting as small as three hours, but they all include two photographers plus an assistant, just like Rebecca Claire.

All in all, at Rebecca Claire Photography, you’re getting a pretty great deal.

Penny’s Noodle Shop; Chicago, IL

On our last day in Chicago, we met up with Julie to return her mother’s shoes (which her mom left at Lauren’s house in Ann Arbor) and have lunch. Julie rode her bike over while we packed up the car and then we walked to a cute little noodle shop down the street, Penny’s Noodle Shop. I love Chicago, have I mentioned that? The fact that you can walk all over is just fantastic! Julie was able to stash her bike in the coat area, and we were set for Thai food.

Being in the north, sweet tea is difficult to find. But Thai Iced Tea is always sweet and delicious.

IMG_6428

I love Tom Kha soup and this one was super delicious! Look at all of those goodies in there.

IMG_6431

Nate always gets the Pad Se Eu with chicken. He just loves the stuff and can never bring himself to try something different. So he goes around comparing the Pad Se Eu at all the Thai places. Because we were travelling and had no place to put the leftovers, we shared a plate, and thank goodness! This picture is after we’ve had our fill. Look at all of that food! Sadly, this was not our favorite Pad Se Eu ever. It had a sweet barbecue flavor to it that was good, but not what we were expecting. The Tom Kha was good enough to return next time and perhaps try a curry dish. MMMMMmmmmmm…. Curry……

LeConte Bridal Show

Club LeConte had their bridal show on the same weekend we shot our movie. Luckily, the fabulous Beth was able to man our booth. She got so many compliments (because she’s awesome) and took some great pictures too! Just thought I’d share a few to brag on her.

Shorty Lu’s Diner; Golden, CO

If you are anywhere near Golden, Colorado, you must eat at Shorty Lu’s Diner! OMG! We were on our way to see Harmony Village (after reading Simple Prosperity, I was quite curious), and we were starving! I asked Karen, our Australian guide (aka GPS computer lady) and she suggested Shorty Lu’s. But sadly, the road we needed was closed! We ended up going in this major detour and were running late. Nate hate’s to be late (which if you know Nate, is sadly hilarious), so he insisted we needed to remove our breakfast/lunch stop at Shorty Lu’s. He was also hungry and getting cranky, and I knew if we didn’t eat soon, the day would be shot. But, being the good wifey that I am, I told Karen to remove the stop. She didn’t. That Karen is a smarty! She could sense the irritation levels rising with the hunger levels and made the executive decision that we must continue on to food no matter what we said. Hurray for Karen! This was amazing food.

IMG_6967

If you see this building, stop, go in, eat.

IMG_6959

Nate had the BLT. It was awesome! Well, the one small bite I got was awesome. Nate scarfed up the rest of that thing. There was a ridiculous amount of bacon on it. RIDICULOUS! The bread was perfectly toasted. The tomato was delicious! And those onion rings weren’t half bad either.

IMG_6960

I had the “short stack.” It was 2 pancakes, and I nearly ordered the tall stack because 2 just sounded so little. So glad I stuck with 2! When they say pancake, what they mean is delicious, giant, bigger than your head oval of amazingness! These were the best pancakes ever! I can’t explain what was so different other than they were perfectly cooked. Fluffy and light. None of that mooshy, mealiness you sometimes get with pancakes out in the world.

IMG_6965

I tried so hard to finish, but I just couldn’t! It was too much! My poor little tummy was so stuffed, but I took at least 3 bites more. I just couldn’t stop. The nice server lady finally rescued me by removing my plate.

And what did all of this cost us? With tip, it was less than $10! WTF?! That much amazingness in my mouth for such a tiny amount of money? It’s true! It happened to me. 🙂

Hot Doug’s; Chicago, IL

This was another suggestion from a friend who had never eaten there, but I believe saw it on Food Network or some place similar. Actually, it was Nathan’s uncle who literally insisted we had to try it. Our local friends had heard of it, but also never tried a Hot Doug. Grey & Eric had to work, but they told us that Doug was known for taking lots of days off. We took our chances that Doug wasn’t on vacation and met up with Gilly & Jerry for lunch.

IMG_6166

We took the long way that involved a train, a bus and way more walking than necessary. Then, when we got there, we saw lots of parking. Oh well. It was an adventure. Gilly & Jerry got there well before us, and good thing they did! As we walked up, we saw a bit of line coming out the door, but it didn’t look bad. That is, until we turned the corner! Yowza! The wait was an hour! For friggin’ hot dogs!

IMG_6147

We enjoyed our time with Gilly & Jerry, though.

IMG_6146

The menu is on little hot dog-shaped boards. So cute. And everything has a funny name. They have all kinds of different sausages as well as hot dogs, corn dogs, veggie dogs, etc.

IMG_6149

We ordered a regular, Chicago-style hot dog since we’d never had one, a brat and a corn dog. We probably should have gone with something fancy, but there were just too many choices, and we couldn’t decide fast enough. There was major pressure to get that order in and get out of the way of the gobs of people waiting behind us! They need to have the menu posted outside somewhere so you have more time to consider.

IMG_6152

The dogs were good. I’ve never had that much stuff on a hot dog before, but I gotta say, I liked it. It’s like a salad on top of a hot dog.

IMG_6153

I love corn dogs! Who doesn’t love breaded, fried meet on a stick?

IMG_6155

Gilly & Jerry practiced acting natural while I captured a few candids.

IMG_6158

Jerry was probably not aware of how pretty the light was at his seat.

IMG_6163

More practicing. They eventually got it figured out.

IMG_6168

So all in all, Hot Doug’s was tastey. I definitely want to try something fancier next time. Oh, and I think we may have met Doug. He told us to get a small drink rather than a large one because refills are free.

Ethiopian Restaurant; Denver, CO

I love Ethiopian food! Ever since our accidental Eritrean experience in Chicago last year, Nathan has been much more open to foods served on delicious sourdough pancake-y things. After our Blue Bonnet debacle, we were desperate for some good food. Luckily, Christy & Brad had just the place in mind. Oh, I also feel the need to mention that we had just written v1 of our zombi script & one of the characters is named Brad. Bad things happen to Brad. We felt kind of guilty about it after meeting Christy’s very nice husband. Of course, it’s not like we had it in for all Brads or anything.

IMG_6930

It’s always a good sign when they announce in 2 ft tall letters that the food is healthy. They also didn’t bother with some sort of confusing name.

IMG_6929

We got a beef dish and a vegetarian dish. They pile it all together and you eat with your hands. I LOVE EATING WITH MY HANDS! There’s something so amazing about experiencing food with more than just smell and taste. Plus, we always got in trouble for touching our food with our hands (unless it was something like burgers or fried chicken, but certainly not something that looks so much like fork food), so it feels kind of naughty.

Aruba

So here we are, in Aruba, hanging out with Dan & Tammy. They’re getting married on Tuesday, but today we met with the planner to get the last details squared away. Their wedding is going to be super! We have had such a great time so far. The trip was easy. Atlanta TSA didn’t feel the need to search my camera bag and touch every piece of glass with a swab. Whew! Then when it looked like our window seat was going to some poor guy from NJ who had missed his earlier flight, we snagged the entire other side of our row which left our seats open so his wife could sit next to him.

The flight was amazing! Sunset over the ocean from 30,000 (or however many it is) feet is awesome! I know you all think I hate to fly, but I really love it. I just hate going through the airport process (the schedule, the packing limit, the touching of my stuff). I love the way the clouds look from above. We left Atlanta and it was a dark, cloudy day, but you get above the clouds and it’s blue skies all around. It’s so beautiful! We were climbing all around trying to get the best views both for stills and video. We shot a full 8G card just of stills and filled up a tape of clouds.

We arrived after dark, so driving around was a trick. Luckily Dan did all the driving, so we just rode around looking at the darkness. We ate pizza at Casa Tua and Nate & I split the one with prosciutto on it, I don’t remember the name. I was so hungry, I didn’t get a shot of the pizza before it was all gone. We were all so tired that we crashed out as soon as we got back to the house.

Today Tammy’s sister’s family is arriving. We loaded up on food and will be grilling for dinner. We had a great time at Ling & Sons grocery. I felt so illiterate (since I can’t read Dutch or Papiamento), so I bought things with nice pictures or that just looked nice. The fruits are huge! I can’t wait to get my eat on.

I promise to get some pictures up asap. But right now I’m off to hang by the pool. 🙂

Philip & Mary

I photographed Philip & Mary’s wedding way back in June and am just now getting it on the blog. Boy was it a busy summer! Boy was it a big wedding. Philip & Mary got married at Crescent Bend and then partied all night long! It was a blast! Beth, one of our fabulous new associate photographers, worked with us as well. We definitely needed a 3 person team for this one. Check out pictures of Mary’s Bridal Portrait and Philip & Mary’s Engagement Portrait.

Chez Steve & Amanda; St. Louis, MO

We showed up in St. Louis with two overripe mangoes that needed eating STAT! Luckily, Steve is a chef and Amanda is a genius (did you see her cinnamon rolls?) and they came up with pork chops with a mango sauce.

Shalini & Nikhil

While in Dallas for the eWomen Network conference, I had a chance to see Shalini & Nikhil. Actually, I stayed with them, and they took me out on the town which was a BLAST! Thanks, guys! They’ve been married for 5 years and are just as insanely adorable as ever!! Can I use a few more exclamation points? Anyway, I love these guys. We need to get to Dallas more often. Before I left, we took a bit to do a quick portrait session. Oh, these two are cute.

SNN_0028

A bit more of the environment. Who wouldn’t be happy in such a great house.

These guys had me cracking up the entire time. They’re so fun together. I can’t wait to get back to Dallas and see them again!
