Gilly & Jerry

Remember that big road trip we took this summer? Well, the main reason we went so far west was to shoot Gillian & Jerry’s wedding. And it was AWESOME! Gilly & Jerry got married at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. The hotel is beautiful, and The Shining by Stephen King was based on it. It’s all spooky & haunted. We had such a great time photographing this wedding. I think there were 17 people (including us) in attendance. Thank you, Gilly & Jerry, for including us in your super special day! 🙂

GJB_0004

Our goody bags included a copy of The Shining.

GJB_0008

The Stanley looking creepy.

GJB_0066

Jerry talking about the great quote he wanted to share but left at the hotel. The rehearsal dinner at Ed’s Cantina was a blast! Lots of great food & margaritas.

GJB_0168

The sopapilla at Ed’s Cantina is FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC! All the other food was great too, but I’m a real sucker for sopapilla.

GJB_0535

It’s the wedding day & Jerry is having a Groom-zilla moment. OK, he’s really just pretending to attack the groomsmen. He wouldn’t hurt a squirrel.

GJB_0900

Gilly didn’t want any “gazing into the mirror” poses, but she just stopped and started gazing and what’s a photographer to do?

GJB_1095

GJB_1147

Jerry is a very funny guy, but he was serious about marrying Gilly.

GJB_1301

He even teared up during the vows. How sweet! Gilly did a little sniffle number herself. It was a super sweet & wonderful & very them ceremony.

GJB_2244

HARD CORE!

GJB_2273

Who is that weirdo with the camera?

GJB_2321

GJB_2383

GJB_2410

Look! It’s strawberries in little tuxedos & wedding dresses with veils!

GJB_2278

There theme was Squirrels (which topped the cake) and Skull & Crossbones.

GJB_2279

These super awesome ties are from Etsy.

GJB_3103

I love the purple on purple. It’s subtle.

GJB_2606

Here Gillian explains the theme. Squirrels are obvious. They’re cute. The Skull thing takes a bit more research. Memento mori were trinkets given by lovers during the Middle Ages. In Gillians words: Basically the idea is to appreciate who you have and what you have because, well, we’re all going to die someday 🙂

GJB_2672

Jerry got to read his quote from the day before. I love the way Gilly is looking up at him. Oh, I’m misting up! Moving on!

GJB_2697

Food! Oh yes! The food was AMAZINGINLY FANTASTICALLY DELICIOUS! This was some sort of squash soup or something. Oh my, but it was perfect!

GJB_2700

Then a delightful little salad.

GJB_2799

I got the Colorado Sampler with trout, elk & venison. I liked the trout best.

GJB_2806

Nathan should have gotten the chicken because I really wanted to try it, but he was a sampler guy as well.

GJB_2841

I really loved the flowers. They were so pretty & delicate. I love all of the little stems tied together. This is Jerry’s mom’s corsage.

GJB_3301

Each piece of Gillian’s bouquet represented something or someone. The love knots (the bits of dangly ribbon with flowers tied to them) were representative of her grandmother & mother’s bouquets.

GJB_2919

There was a skirmish at the cake table.

GJB_2994

But they made up in the end.

I love weddings like this. Every detail had meaning. Every guest was incredibly important. Gillian & Jerry were best friends who never expected to fall in love. But they did and how wonderful is that!

Happy 85th Helen

The Rutledge family is fantastic! I photographed two of the Rutledge boy’s weddings and when it was time to throw a big birthday bash for their grandmother, who did they call to photograph the festivities? ME! Each of the three boys has a beautiful child and Jonathan & Amber have one more on the way. We started with some fun family portraits and then went right into the party. Helen’s late husband was a minister at the church where they had the party, so it was special for many reason.

Happy 85th Birthday, Helen! And congratulation on having such a wonderful family!

Carolyn (Nate’s cousin, the famous authoress)

Nathan’s cousin, Carolyn, is a famous authoress. And rightfully so, because she rocks out on all of the authory things she does. Nathan had never met Carolyn, but it just so happened that she was helping her friend Joi move to Kansas.

IMG_3641

Why would Joi, a city girl, move out to Kansas from NYC? For love, of course! So she and Carolyn were on a fabulous road trip and happened to stop in Gatlinburg, just down the road from Knoxville.

IMG_3642

Nate’s mom (not pictured) managed to get us all hooked up with phone numbers and such, so we took these lovely ladies to Big Fatty’s which was right down the street from Carpe Librum (a wonderful local bookstore) where Carolyn had planned to stop and sign a few copies of her book.

IMG_3643

It was a delightful visit & we shall have to do it again sometime.

Christie & Josh

Happy fourth anniversary, Christie & Josh!  I photographed Christie & Josh’s wedding at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church and Country Club of Roswell four years ago today.  They are a super nice couple!  Their son, Gavin, is just as sweet as he can be.  Josh’s family flew over from England, and they had a fantastic party!

Christie was a bit nervous, but her bridesmaids were there for her!

Dad & Son on the way to Hubby.  It’s a “special man” triumvirate!

Alison Alvord was the florist.

I love their cake topper!

Naughty, Christie!  Notice the Sponge Bob cake?  That was for Josh’s niece who was having a birthday that night!  Gavin definitely noticed the Sponge Bob cake.  🙂

Nice, Christie.  Cleaning up her mess.  🙂

Josh & his favorite ladies, Christie & Mom.

I photographed Josh’s brother’s wedding the next spring at the Georgia Aquarium.

Bowling Family Portrait

Right after I got back from the eWomen Network Conference, but before we shot our movie, I shot this fun family portrait. The Bowling family has two adorable little girls, but the littlest one doesn’t like having her picture taken. She’s so cute and giggly until you point a camera at her. Well, we can work with that! By the end of our shoot, she had all but forgotten the camera was there. Take that, pouty face! 🙂

You know what drives me crazy?

People who can’t allow other people to have their own opinion. It’s an opinion! We all have the right to one. But some people seem offended when others have opinions that differ. Let’s take sports, a subject I really don’t care all that much about. People really get into their sports teams and can be violent towards those who cheer for a different team. Really? If you press me, I like the Braves & Hawks for baseball & basketball and Georgia Tech is my college team since my college didn’t get into sports. Hockey & soccer, whatever. I suppose the Falcons would round out my Atlanta group in football. Luckily, the majority of my preferred teams aren’t big rivals for anyone, but I’ve gotten some real crap about a few of my choices. Singing the GA Tech fight song is enough to bring real contempt in a few circles. It’s just a song! Hell, it’s just a GAME! They don’t call a football game a Football THE FATE OF THE WORLD RESTS ON THE OUTCOME OF THIS EVENT! Why? Because it doesn’t. It’s supposed to be fun.

Then there’s politics. This has become a huge sore point in our country. I’ve been on the loosing side for a while and am happy to finally be on the side that’s able to make some decisions. I prefer the decisions my group makes over the other group. That’s why I voted for them. Does that invalidate the other side? No! There are plenty of people who prefer the decisions that group makes, and if they can rally enough people, they can be back in the decision making chair next time. Of course, I’m going to work to keep my side in that seat, but that makes sense. I want the people I agree with making the laws. It would be nonsensical for me to be otherwise. Some people think that whichever side they’re on is 100% perfect and right in every way. I don’t. There are topics on which I may disagree with my chosen group, but until I run for office, there most likely will not be a politician who perfectly embodies all of my opinions. These same people also seem to believe that expressing a different opinion is somehow unAmerican. Well, I think that’s a load of bunk. We are here because our ancestors had a different opinion from whatever country they came from. We are no longer a British colony because enough people had a strong enough difference of opinion that they chose to declare war on their rulers. We are founded on the right to have separate opinions from our neighbors and yet still be able to live amicably together.

I admit, there are certain topics that I feel strongly enough about to try and convince others to change their opinion. But I realized that the worst way to do this is by screaming at people who disagree and telling them how wrong they are. Nope! They’re just going to dig their heels in and scream right back at me. I have to show them that my way makes more sense. I have to appeal to their sense of order, understanding, morality, etc. Take recycling for example. I have had friends in the past who believe that recycling is unnecessary, even wrong, because they believe that it takes more energy to make a can out of recycled aluminum than brand new. I disagree. I think they aren’t taking into account the energy required to mine and refine the ore, to transport it, and to dispose of the waste of the old can we are replacing. I think they aren’t taking into account the destruction of the landscape in the mining activities or the potential environmental hazards caused by both the mining and the disposal processes. Now, if I yelled at them every time they threw away a can “HOW DARE YOU DESTROY MY ENVIRONMENT YOU LAZY JERK!” they would never listen to me. Instead, I dig their can out of the garbage and recycle it myself and when an appropriate time comes in a civil conversation, I voice my concerns and allow them the chance to voice theirs. Hopefully, I am able to persuade. If not, that doesn’t mean we can’t still be friends.

Obviously, I’m not advocating keeping your opinion to yourself, but I’m also not advocating screaming it from the mountain tops to the irritation of all around you. If you feel strongly about a topic, share it in a civilized manner! If you don’t feel strongly enough to stand behind your opinion in an intelligent way, be willing to compromise. Being louder doesn’t make you smarter, better or more correct. It just makes us all think you’re a big baby who can’t come up with a good enough defense of your opinion to voice it in an adult tone and must resort to tantrum techniques. It’s unattractive and undermines your stance. Now let’s all go out and be adults.

One more thank you

I’ve been oohing & ahhing over our cast & crew for about 2 weeks now. Every time I watch Nathan cut together a scene, I admire Melinda’s awesome make up & Karrie’s invaluable contributions to our costume selection (Brent’s costume is PERFECT thanks to Karrie). I see the way things just went together so smoothly thanks to Travis, Adam & Dusty and how well Brent & Alex did bringing our characters to life. Of course, there are the awesome additions to our slate, thanks to Aaron & Larry (you have been immortalized) & Vincent. And don’t forget the awesome vomit & blood pump job by Scott. We have a few snippets between takes where you can hear suggestions and all of the important things that really made this project come together. But there’s one person I haven’t officially thanked, and he’s the reason we even did this.

So, Thank You Nathan! I mean, I hate zombies. Really! Why would I have ever thought to make a zombi film? But it was so much fun, I can’t wait to make the next one. Brent & Alex did a fantastic job, and I can’t wait to work with them again, but if Nathan hadn’t described to them how we had envisioned the scene, how would they have known what we wanted? Actors need direction, and Nathan provided it. He got out there and demonstrated the proper way to rise from the dead and sneak up and bite people. Nathan planned out every scene and every shot. Yeah, I typed it into excel like a good little OCD accountant’s daughter, but I wouldn’t have know what to type without him. He was nice the entire time, despite not getting enough sleep or food. He was focused and professional. I really enjoyed watching him work (and not just because he’s my super hottie hubby).

Now that the shoot is over and everyone has gone back to their regularly scheduled lives, the work has only intensified for Nathan. He’s in his not quite finished basement office (which is sometimes cold! What an improvement over always boiling) just plugging away. Every shot was planned out, but that doesn’t mean the puzzle pieces just come together. Nope. You have to finesse them. Shave a clip by one frame and it goes from awkward to perfect. It’s like magic.

He told me he didn’t need any thanks, but everyone needs to know they’re appreciated. So Nate, that’s for being the impetus for the best, most fun, sleep deprived and hilarious weekend ever! I love you!

Christy & Matt

We photographed Christy & Matt’s wedding right before our big trip. They are hilarious as are their friends! I don’t think I’ve met a funnier, goofier wedding party. Everyone was hamming it up. The wedding was at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral downtown. The church is BEAUTIFUL but they don’t allow photography during the ceremony. Of course, we took advantage of that time to get some great exteriors. Because they wanted to get to the reception ASAP, we did all of the pictures before the ceremony except for a couple with the priest and a few exit shots with Christy’s adorable cherry apple red Mini Cooper. Then it was off to L&N Station for a fabulous night of dancing. I saw the DJ again at the next wedding we photographed and will have to find his information (he’d run out of cards). He was great!

eWomen Headshots

So we do this every so often. I set up my stuff at the eWomen Network luncheon and take headshots for anyone who needs them. It’s fun! I just got the last batch on line, and I thought I might share one with you. This is my friend Linda Parrent, owner of Elegant Essentials (in the Gallery Shopping Center). She’s fabulous, but she HATES having her picture taken. It’s almost funny how worked up she gets about it. Well, HA!, Linda, you look fabulous!

A Zombi test

So as you know, we made a little movie. But before the movie came lots of tests. We tested zombi skin & blood & make up as well as the movements. Nate’s brother Aaron has this friend, Adrian, who is a GREAT zombi! Here are a few shots from a test we did back in June.
