Kari & Abraham

Kari & Abraham were my first wedding of the 09 season (boy have I been slow with the posting) and what a great way to start the spring! They are a super sweet couple with super sweet family & friends. Their ceremony & reception were at Sherwood Forest in Pigeon Forge. We snuck out for a few quick “mountain” shots as well.

Kari’s brothers sang and played guitar while everyone sang along.

Great Idea: if you want to have lots of people for your sendoff and look your best (not all dance sweaty), try having that after the ceremony before the reception. Everyone sends you off (with bubbles, perhaps) to get your pictures made while they enjoy hors d’oeuvres.

KAC_5691

Lovin’ in the mountains!

Road trip part something…

A three week road trip is quite an undertaking. My goal this time was to stay with friends and family along the way. Our last road trip was all state highways or smaller and we kept to about 4 hours of driving each day. It was a looser schedule, but we had to fend for ourselves for every meal (and we did not always choose well) and most nights we spent either in a hotel or camp ground. I’ve really enjoyed seeing people, and we reconnected with several folks we hadn’t seen in years. Of course, we also have had to be more strict on our times and take mostly interstate. We are working with the schedules of others. I wasn’t able to find a host in Nebraska, so we drove straight from Des Moines to Denver (which is quite a trek). This segment is the trip to Des Moines and between it and Denver. There is some beautiful country out there, but boy can you start to lose your mind. 🙂

_MG_6151

Oh, look! It’s me!

_MG_6172

Me again! Boy, two pictures of me in a row! That doesn’t happen often.

IMG_6448

This is what I was shooting.

IMG_6472

Nate was shooting it as well. It’s the view from an abandoned gas station parking lot. Sure, the location is a bit creepy, but you have to suck it up for your art. Oh how we suffer. 😉

IMG_6490

We stayed at Nate’s Uncle Joe’s house with his Aunt Cindy. This is their dog, Daisy, who is the sweetest, happiest, friendliest dog (after Alfred, of course).

IMG_6495

After meeting Daisy, Nate has been talking about getting a boxer.

IMG_6513

Daisy has a friend, Missy, aka Basement Kitty.

IMG_6531

IMG_6573

View from a rest area. Actually, this was the same as the view from the road. Lots and lots of corn. Might I suggest The Omnivore’s Dilemma?

IMG_6583

Nebraska has AWESOME clouds.

IMG_6604

We were too slow to dig up the camera from the back to catch the holes, but I’m convinced these are punji pits.

IMG_6614

I don’t know. Do you? It was really big.

IMG_6627

Look at all of that rain! We loved seeing the rain from afar. Of course, we also got to see the rain up close & personal. The midwest really knows how to throw a storm!

IMG_6665

IMG_6748

Did I mention we began to lose our minds?

IMG_6786

I just thought these were cool & made Nate take a picture of them. I like the random ones rather than the ones all lined up in a row.

IMG_6806

There are grasshoppers in there someplace. We totally freaked them out and they were all jumping into the grass. It was really cool sounding.

_MG_6162

Soon after this we arrived in Denver and crashed out with our friends. Stay tuned for more updates!

WOW! Where’s the internet for my Road Trip?

OK, it has been a FANTASTIC trip! Of course, all of this fun has really gotten in the way of my blogging. So where to begin (or resume)?

I’ve decided to break this up a bit (since I have about a week of catching up to do already) and put my restaurant reviews in separate blogs. We’ve eaten at some great (and a few AWFUL) spots, so be sure to check back for the honest truth on where we’ve eaten.

For this segment, I believe I left off at our arrival in Chicago. We love Chicago! We had a great time there last year for Grey & Eric’s wedding. Last year we stayed with Gillian & Jerry (who got married in Estes Park and were the reason for this leg of our trip) and barely got to see Grey & Eric (getting ready for a wedding will limit your visiting with friends from out of town time). This time we stayed with Grey & Eric which was fabulous! They are so much fun. Eric & Nate bonded at Beth’s wedding.

IMG_6172

Nate was full of hot dogs from Hot Doug’s (review coming soon) when we walked back to Grey & Eric’s. We paused for a breather and to admire a well-placed zombie platform.

IMG_6174

The Sox were playing so we rode the L to see a game. It was quite exciting as the train felt as though it might leave the tracks any second.

IMG_6189

This is Eric just after a particularly bumpy segment. Note the relief. That indicates we are still on track.

IMG_6203

Stadium was PACKED!

IMG_6218

Our seats are the ones directly behind the post. Nosebleeds all the way!

IMG_6217

This dude spent much of the game standing between us and our view of the field. Luckily, we had lots of other entertainment. The folks just behind and across the aisle from us got booted for being in the wrong seats which was exciting. The crowd was extremely rowdy (note the 2 beers. Could be part of it.) and booed every time the wave didn’t make it all the way around. It was super fun!

IMG_6195

Can you spot the Cubs fan? Oh yes. There was an interloper. He got soundly booed. (hint, he’s the guy standing up NOT selling beer)

IMG_6199

What’s a ball game without the over-priced nachos (we had dogs for lunch).

IMG_6201

And funnel cake! Man do I love powdered sugar!

IMG_6433

After the game, we went to Paddy Long’s where they have raspberry lambic on tap! Obviously this shot was taken at a different time, but you get the idea. Cute neighborhood pub with RASPBERRY LAMBIC ON TAP! Damn, that’s good!

IMG_6219

Well, hell0… This is the amazingly cute, amazingly agile puppy who can squeeze through a kitty door on the puppy gate.

IMG_6237

Oso was calm for about 2 seconds. Luckily, I was shooting at 1/30th, so I caught him.

IMG_6248

IMG_6311

This is Alex. He’s cute but less friendly than Ralph.

IMG_6322

But he loves his dad!

IMG_6309

He’s a bit cross-eyed, but that’s part of the charm.

IMG_6382

We need one of these kitty trees.

IMG_6396

Here’s Alex again. This was just before he hid under the bed.

So Chicago rocked! We ate lunch with Julie and then hit the road to Des Moines. We’d never been to a game where the fans were quite so into it! That was great fun. The transit system was a bit confusing, but the maps on the iPhone will tell you the best route if you’re taking the bus (including which bus you need, where to pick it up and when it should arrive) which came in very handy.

It’s really quite late now and we have more driving to do tomorrow. I will do my best to get all caught up asap!

Jim & Joan

I have know Jim’s family since I was 2.  His daughter Kelly & I went to school together.  When he decided he was ready to remarry, I was ecstatic that they chose me as their photographer.  Joan is wonderful, and they are such an adorable couple!  Their wedding theme was Eat, Drink, Boogie, Repeat and was all about friends and family.  Here are some pages from their album.

I love this quote.

Their ceremony was at The Little Chapel in Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on Emory’s campus.

We continued on for the party at Houston Mill House where we did as we were told and ate, drank, boogied and repeated.  Well, I didn’t drink since I was on the job.  🙂

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!  And here’s to many more to come!

Road Trip Day… Um, what day is it?

So we’ve had less internet access for our computers than we thought we would. We’ve also been uber busy having way too much fun to blog! But I do want to share some of my shots and activities so you can all live vicariously. 🙂

We spent several days at the art fair. Wednesday, Thursday & Friday to be exact. By Friday we were kind of art faired out. It was great, but we seemed to find a lot of the crafty, consumer focused items rather than actual art at the end. One of our favorite artists, Andrew Shea, works in glass. He & Nate had a great conversation. We also found someone who makes wooden spoons & spatulas. He has an entire line of left-handed utensils. We are definitely buying some for Nathan. The guy in the picture below does woodworking and had his bowls on display. I’m still looking for his card (oh the fun of travel!)

IMG_4877

If you want to come to the art fairs next year, there are 3 of them. Ann Arbor Street Fair, the Original; State Street Area Art Fair; Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair; and Ann Arbor’s South University Art Fair. We will definitely return.

Julie & her mom came Thursday night and we had dinner together while Lauren worked. We tried a sushi place down the street and Phyllis ordered the sweet shrimp which came out with the head deep fried. She ate all of it much to Julie’s disturbance. 🙂

_MG_5278

After dinner we spent the night with John & Megan then art faired again Friday. Megan had a wedding in Cincinnati & it was day one of the art fairs for Julie & Phyllis, so John, Nate & I went to an estate sale where Nate & I bought a projector and two reels of film. We have NO idea what’s on them. Pretty exciting! They also had several cars from the early 1900s and a 1950s cold pak.

IMG_4902

IMG_4914

We ended the evening at Lauren’s playing Uno late into the night. BTW, I kicked ass! 🙂

IMG_4957

Saturday Lauren cooked a fabulous meal for us! Oh, man was it amazing! We had an Italian theme & gorged ourselves. John & Megan, Megan’s mom & her friend Bill joined us just in time. Julie, her mom, Lauren, Nate & I had crowded around Lauren’s table and had our fill. So when team two arrived, we cleared out to let them have table space. It worked out great!

IMG_4983

A few before shots. Yes, that’s Zingerman’s bread, potentially baked by Lauren.

IMG_4966

IMG_4997

After the gorgacious meal!

IMG_4991

Peach tart made with read South Carolina peaches (provided by us). Sadly the peaches weren’t as good as the last batch I bought, but Lauren definitely made them work! Thanks for the save!

IMG_4993

Team 1 taking a break. That’s Julie on the left. She was my fabulous roommate senior year of college. She also does really cool pet portraits!

IMG_4922

John just hanging in his awesome hangin’ out spot. They are planning to have the attic finished (i.e. insulated) so he can do all of his music up there. It’s an AMAZING space!

IMG_5022

I love this shot of Megan. I made her sit there and be still because the light was just too perfect. You know, I think I told David & Sonya that I do that to people (and might have more friends if I didn’t, but I’m okay with that) after I made them stop for the cool under the bridge shots on our way back to their car.

IMG_5051

We hung out in John’s fabulous attic and all crashed out at their house only to wake up to walk to a huge breakfast buffet downtown. There is a waffle under there someplace.

IMG_5032

I made friends with Raga, John & Megan’s super tiny kitty. Yes, she’s sitting on my shoulders.

After lunch on Sunday, we drove to Chicago to stay with Grey & Eric who you may remember from our last trip to Chicago for their wedding. We had awesome Chicago Style pizza at Pequod’s & met the cats (who they claim are evil attack kitties, but are really super sweet & fluffy).

IMG_6104

Sausage & mushroom. YUM! I made it through one piece (plus two jalepeno poppers) before I was too stuffed to eat another bite!

IMG_6109

Coming in to say good night (and gnaw on my toes).

IMG_6118

Nathan is like friggin’ Snow White. All animals LOVE him.

IMG_6141

Ralph has beautiful blue eyes! I didn’t do ANYTHING PhotoShop wise. That’s just how blue they are!

IMG_6137

So sweet and innocent.

IMG_6099

We were amused to see that people left notes for each other around the city. This is not the only one we saw. This we actually saw on our way back from the portrait sitting at the lake with David & Sonya.

So now I’m all caught up on the pictures I’ve actually looked at. We spent another day in Chicago, caught at Sox game (which was super fun!), met up with Julie, drove to Des Moines. Well, you get the picture. The fun just doesn’t stop! Nate has to do some work on the drive that has all of the pictures on it. Of course, I’m getting to type all of this on his new laptop (mwahahaha!). I’ll try to wrestle it away from him soon. I know you just can’t wait for the next installment!

David & Sonya

David & Sonya won our engagement story contest this spring. You can read their story here. They live in Chicago, and I LOVE Chicago, so any excuse to go is fine by me. It just so happened that we were driving through Chicago on our way to photograph a wedding in Estes Park, CO (yes, it’s between Tennessee & Colorado). I was so excited to meet them after reading their story, and they are just as fun and spontaneous as can be. Here are a few quick shots to give you an idea.

We’re still on the road, so Nate hasn’t had a chance to really get his hands on these, but I just couldn’t keep them to myself any longer! We met up at Lincoln Park Zoo & then headed over to the lake with the sky line in the background. The weather was PERFECT! Thanks David & Sonya & Chicago for being so awesome! 🙂

Trisha

I love photographing Trisha. You may remember her from the Juliette Atelier shoot and her wedding in New Orleans. She works for Adaptable Furniture Concepts and needed a shot for an ad they were running in Metro Pulse. The chair is earth friendly, and they have a whole bunch of other earth friendly products that they wanted to promote. So Danna did hair & makeup, Michelle did wardrobe & Trisha & I drug a chair out to Ijams and had a fabulous time.

Massage Goddess Brandy

Many of you are familiar with Brandy’s beautiful jewelry. What you may not know is that Brandy is THE ABSOLUTE BEST MASSAGE THERAPIST EVER!! Seriously. I have had some LONG weddings, several of them out of town, so when I get home, I may or may not be in a suitable condition for interacting with the public. See, I keep my stress in my shoulders along with holding a massive camera (seriously, I get a comment at every wedding. I didn’t realize it was so big.) and that adds up to a tidy little hocky puck of pain just under my right shoulderblade. Perhaps if I was better about doing my yoga I wouldn’t get this thing, but I’m not. So when it shows up, I call Brandy and she makes it all better. I LOVE YOU BRANDY!

Brandy has a wonderful oasis in Fitness Together on Northshore. She’s tucked away behind a really cool exercise concept and feared people would see Fitness Together and think gym rather than calming massage room. So, not only am I here to tell you that it is a fabulous, calming space, I have pictures to back it up.

MassageRoom-28

MassageRoom-35

So now that you’ve seen it, give them a call and book your massage (865)357-8663. Oh, and they do personal training, so get some of that too. Tell them Rebecca Claire sent you.

Road Trip Day 2

We have had several great days so far. Right now we’re at Lauren’s. She’s taking a nap before work. Blue (the parakeet Lauren’s co-worker found and she’s looking after while looking for his home) is hanging out in Mali’s cage (Mali is Lauren’s 9 year old parrot) just singing away. He’s so cute! I didn’t realize birds could be so cute. He’s fun to have riding on your shoulder. Uh-oh, that sounds like pirate tendencies. Hmmm… I prefer bourbon to rum, though. 🙂

Nate & Blue

Nate & Blue

So we went to the Art Fairs yesterday & saw all kinds of cool artist. There was even someone there from Maryville (just south of Knoxville). Some of my favorites were a guy that made drawers out of old books, an amazing furniture maker, a lady who was dressed like she was ready for safari (because she was, I guess. She does drawings & paintings of animals that she observes in the wild), a really cool quilter, a block printer, a painter/printmaker, and a guy that makes cool graphic paintings in flash and then prints them on canvas. I also saw two artists that make me think of Nate’s cousin Carolyn. One reminded me of her book Godmother and the other had large paintings of mermaids.

After the art fairs, we went to John & Megan’s AMAZING new house for a barbecue. Their house is so fabulous! It’s over 100 years old and the lady who owned it before was quite a character. The neighbors are also really cool. We had a really lovely evening which ended with the newest Harry Potter movie. Of course, they seem to expect we all know the major plot points and are only there to see the blossoming teen romances. Nate hasn’t read any of the books and only saw the first 2 movies. I think he may read the books now though. 🙂 The best part was the entire row of sobbing women right behind us. Like we didn’t know what was coming (either because we read the books or thanks to the heavy-handed “hints” thrown in.)

Today we returned to the Art Fairs. We met Lauren’s sister and two of her nephews. This time we met a really cool glass artist and finally saw some photographers who were not printing on an old, crappy HP with major pixellation. Finally, we saw people who had canvas prints and traditional photographic prints that didn’t look overly digital. Hurray!

After lunch, John & Megan picked us up, and we had second lunch at Zingerman’s Deli. Nate & I had a delicious muffaLeo. I also got to try the gelato. YUM!! Then we went to the Apple Store & bought Nate’s new computer. They only have glossy screens now, which is a bummer, but it looks like a great machine.

Julie, my senior year college roommate, & her mom will be here soon. I think we will be staying at John & Megan’s to give Julie & her mom the guest room. For now, though, we’re just hanging out with Blue & Mali.
