Road Trip Day 1

It’s day one on the road & I’m sitting here in my friend Lauren’s guest room waiting for Nate to get up. Today’s activities include the Art Fairs in the morning & receiving our GPS from UPS between 2-5 this afternoon at Lauren’s house (honestly, it probably would have arrived in time since we left so late, but we were concerned we’d miss it if we sent it to our house, so we shipped it here and are super excited to get it!)

Our iPhone map got us up here no problem (Directions from Knoxville to Ann Arbor: Get on I-75. Drive for 7-8 hours. TADA!), but we would love to do more off-highway traveling. My old GPS died after 3 years leaving us stranded at 11 p.m. in the middle of northern Alabama. Hopefully this one will last longer!

We also hope to make it by the Apple Store to purchase a laptop for Nathan. One concern about this trip is Nathan’s race schedule. Since race graphics are a large part of our income, whenever the graphics need doing, we do them. If that means we’re typing graphics on the road in the middle of Nebraska, so be it! 🙂 It goes faster if we can both work on it, obviously, so we need a second computer that is travel capable. Also, Nate needs a computer to take when he travels without me since he can’t take mine! 🙂

Wow! So this is already an expensive trip what with the GPS & laptop, but these are both purchases we had intended to make and are using the trip as a reason to do it now. The GPS isn’t one of the super expensive ones, but neither is it a cheapy. It’s the Garmin Nuvi 755t (I looked at the 765, but for $50-75 more, all I got was bluetooth to hook to my phone) which I found for the cheapest at NewEgg.com. There were other places with good prices, but I’ve always had great luck with newegg, so why stray, right. Especially since we’re working with a deadline before we leave the state!

The computer Nate wants is the 13″ Macbook Pro, the slower one even. He has his big computer for major stuff like video editing, so he just needs this for small photoshop jobs and writing while on the road. I’m hoping to get a new battery for mine too (since it only lasts about 45 minutes now). So we are getting a pretty inexpensive computer! 🙂

Ok, beyond our trip purchases, we have also been invited to a bbq at our friends John & Megan’s new house. You may remember them from their wedding in October. Megan got a job teaching up here, so they moved last month. We miss them terribly! They were among our favorite Knoxvillians! But I was able to connect them with Lauren, which is AWESOME! Plus, we had already planned to come up here, so they’re a wonderful bonus to the trip! We can’t WAIT to see their new house! Of course, we REALLY can’t wait to see them!

So that’s about it. The drive yesterday took way longer than expected (Ohio has a lot of construction and very slow speed limits), but the time really flew. Nate & I worked on an idea for a short film we plan to shoot in August, post in September and enter into a festival by October 1st. I’ll have more on that later!

One last thing. Two days before we left, there was an awful (amazing) storm that just poured rain and wind. I love storms! This one knocked out the power for hours (which I also love. No power means you have to find other means of entertainment. I cleaned by window and lamp light, and we played Apples to Apples by the front door.) The wind took down about half of our across the street neighbor’s Bradford Pear! Of course, it was the side that landed on the driveway! Luckily, the man was at work or his car would have been crushed. I was only partly joking when we took down our Bradford Pear that I hated them because they were stinky, invasive and likely to split & fall on either your house or your car. I mean, to have that decision so completely verified is kind of neat. And luckily, no one was hurt in the lesson. I don’t know why people insist on planting those awful stink weeds! The Cleveland Pear grows quickly, is pretty, doesn’t stink, isn’t invasive, and doesn’t split and fall on your house or car with the same regularity as the Bradfords.

Kevin Kragenbrink

I have been shooting a lot of headshots lately. Many of them are through my eWomen Network connections, so you may think I only photograph women. But wait! I also photograph men. Kevin Kragenbrink is a business coach and owns Estrada Strategies here in Knoxville, and we did some headshots for him last year. Then he was going for a more business casual look, and this time it was strictly business.

Mary & Philip’s Engagement Portraits

WHAT?! I haven’t blogged Mary & Philip’s Engagement Portrait?! What is wrong with me! These are great! I had such a fun time photographing these guys. Mary was a little nervous during her bridal portrait, but once we got her with Philip, she was cool as a cucumber. Philip is a designer (my web designer in fact) and so we had mucho pressure to get extra design-tastic images. But what can I say, we do good work. 🙂 Nathan & Beth came along on this shoot. Nate shot, Beth held our fun new reflector toy. The weather looked like it was going to rain, and I was hoping for a bit at the end to get some fun “in the rain” shots. But it didn’t rain for 3 more days after our shoot! We trekked all over the Old City, and this is what we got.

Lindsay & Paul

Lindsay is one of my dear friends.  When she told me she and Paul were getting married, I was so excited!  They have been together forever (Literally!).  Their wedding was at the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, and we had a great time playing around the sculptures and playhouses on display.  It was a very relaxed, very private wedding with a reception at their house catered by Your Place, Not Mine.  I think I was the only one there not related to anyone.  It’s been 5 years, now!!  And Lindsay was sweet enough to leave me a super awesome testimonial which I have ever so strategically pasted below.  I just wanted to take a minute to wish Lindsay & Paul a happy BIG 5!!  I can’t wait to add a 0 to the end of that!  You guys are amazing!  🙂

This is everyone who attended.  I told you it was a private wedding. Lindsay’s Testimonial: Love my wedding album! Describe your favorite picture. Our wedding was in a botanical garden featuring an exhibit called “Playhouses and Forts.” My favorite wedding photo is one where my husband and I are peeking out of one of the forts — which is shaped like a giant Chinese takeout box. How did the photographer get pictures without being disruptive? Was the photographer equally good with posed photos and action shots? Claire is very easy to work with. She is also especially talented at suggesting locations and poses that make great photos. What did you order in the way of prints, photo albums, etc.? What packages did the photographer or studio offer? Was there an engagement session included in the price? My family and I ordered a variety of prints. Package services are reasonably priced. How did the photographer help make you and your family comfortable with posing for pictures? We took the majority of our photos before the wedding. Claire made us feel very comfortable and relaxed. We had a great time and didn’t take ourselves too seriously. This resulted in some very playful, natural and spontaneous pictures that captured our personalities.

Mary’s Bridal Portrait

I love shooting bridal portraits. It gives brides a chance to really get comfortable with their dress/hair/make up/shoes and me! The only thing that drives me crazy is that I can’t share them until AFTER the wedding. Mary & Philip just got married at Crescent Bend, so I can finally share her pictures! Her dress is from A Joyous Occasion and we shot her portraits in April at Crescent Bend so she could have the tulips. I’ll have wedding pictures up as soon as I can! 🙂

Cecilee’s Headshots

Cecile DeNardo wanted some new headshots. She’s not so into the traditional boring headshots. Luckily, I can do different! These were so fun! Plus, Cecilee is cute as a button!

Jan & Chip

Today is Jan & Chips anniversary!  They are such a fun couple. There’s something about Jan that reminds me of my friend Grey (of the Chicago wedding last fall).  Their wedding was at Wolf Mountain Vineyards which is fantastically gorgeous!  The ceremony site over looks the north Georgia mountains. There are vineyards up the hill.  The food was wonderful, and the wine, of course, award winning!  The flowers were incredible as well thanks to Flowers by Jay.  Whoa Nelly kept the party hopping with great blue grass.  Good times were had by all!

Sarah Beth & Richard

In May we went to St. Simon’s Island, Georgia to photograph Sarah Beth & Richard. It was a HUGE wedding with 15 bridesmaids & 15 groomsmen. They only had 6 of each stand with them (it was a TINY church) and the rest were seated. Why did they have so many? Well, they had 6 siblings to include and then once you start adding friends, it can spiral very quickly. The groomsmen were hilarious with “Team 1” & “Team 2” (team 1 being the family). Their wedding was at Christ Church and the reception was at the King & Prince.

Stephanie & Chris

Stephanie & Chris are celebrating their fourth anniversary today!

Their ceremony was at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Marietta.  The church had just built a new sanctuary and had not created the mosaics yet, but the building itself was absolutely beautiful.

The priests (there were three) were all incredibly nice and had suggestions for the best angles of the ceremony.  A Greek Orthodox ceremony has several elements that are not found in other Christian ceremonies, so I definitely found attending the rehearsal helpful.  A quick bit of trivia, did you know that in the Greek Orthodox church, often the wedding ring is worn on the right hand rather than the left?  This is because Christ is the right hand of God.

Stephanie’s dress was Ulla-Maija from Impressions Salon.

They were just so good at the dip-kiss!

The tuxes were from Savvi.

After their ceremony, guests were invited to the reception at the Georgian Terrace (who also catered).

Spectrum Entertainment provided the DJ.  There was much dancing, and quite a bit was of the traditional Greek variety.  This shot, however, is their first dance.
