Arun Gandhi

On Tuesday the 10th, my friend Bailey Earith & I went to see Arun Gandhi speak at Pellissippi. He was fantastic! Bailey posted a link on her blog about it as well as a video. Go check it out at the Bailey Fiber Art Blog.

I want to share a few things I took note of during the lecture.

First, over-consumption is violence against the world and against Nature and humanity by creating poverty in those areas that are stripped of resources so that we can have our goodies. I am not perfect in this, but I am trying to shrink my carbon footprint as best I can by buying local and recycling among other things.

Passive violence is just as bad as physical violence. Passive violence creates anger in the victim who then resorts to physical violence seeking “justice.” There is not such thing as closure through revenge. Violence (both passive & physical) begets more violence.

Arun suggested that prisons should be for reform rather than just punishment. It would require a complete overhaul of the system, but think about what our world would be if people released from prison had skills they could use for gainful employment rather than a sense of violence and only those skills useful to continue a life of crime. We should also raise our children with penance not punishment because punishment is control through fear while penance is control through love.

My favorite part was a story about a king seeking the secret to peace. An old wise man gave him a grain of wheat which the king put away in a gold box and studied every day. When the wise man returned to the king’s realm, the king asked him how this grain of wheat was supposed to teach him the secret to peace. The wise man told him that peace and wheat are the same. If you keep a grain of wheat locked away and never share it with anyone it will eventually rot and perish with you. Peace must also be shared. You must plant it and let it grow. Let it interact with the world so that everyone can have some and share it with others. In this way, peace will be available to everyone.

To avoid too much repetition, here’s a different video.

Studio 54 Gala

YPLCCF hosted their annual fundraising gala this past weekend. My lovely associate photographers Elizabeth, Courtney and Scott (who is more handsome than lovely) did a real bang up job of helping me capture the magic that was Studio 54. We had such a fabulous time! The event was held at the Valarium and Rothchild Catering provided fantastic food!

The pictures are now online for you to view and purchase.

Here are a few shots to give you an idea of the fabulousity that was the event!

A few neat articles to keep you from doing too much work. ;)

I have only skimmed this one about finding little treats in a down economy, but what I read was interesting.

This one about the benefits of papaya and the next few are from one of my favorite green blogs.

Again from the green diva mom blog, a little article about de-stressing.

While we aren’t quite ready to give up meat, here’s an article about plant based diets to give you some ideas on how to cut back on animal products and replace those nutrients with plants.

If you haven’t tried Kombucha, you really should. It’s tasty and good for you. Of course, it’s also a bit expensive, so here’s an article on how to make it yourself.

Ever get stuck in traffic and need to know what’s up? Here’s the TDOT webpage that gives you the lowdown on what’s up.

Wonder what your name means? Look it up. Rebecca means “captivating” and Claire means “bright and clear.”

A very important article for us visual artists. Get those B vitamins, folks!

And now back to work.

Get your wedding photography questions answered live

I have now reactivated my old IM accounts and would love for folks to test them out with me (since I can’t test them myself). The accounts that are currently active are:

AIM
MSN
Yahoo!Messenger
Facebook
Gmail

I can’t seem to get my old ICQ number to work and my MyspaceChat is just sitting at 67% logged in, so those are currently out, I suppose. Anyway, I’ve set all of my alias/profile names to RebeccaClaire. Look for me if you have those chat programs and let me know if you have trouble. My chat icon is a bride profile, full length in front of a window.

UPDATE:
I just signed up for a new ICQ and added a couple of other messenger clients. Then I crashed the program. Sigh… It’s a bad crash. As in, every time I open it, it crashes. Guess I’ll have to start over.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE:
We’re back on line! Drop us an IM and let’s see if this thing works.

Where does it all go?

Here are some artery blocking ways to stretch your stomach. A few of them sounded pretty tasty (deep fried s’more), but some are just ridiculous (bacon explosion wellington). http://thisiswhyyourefat.com/

Fidelity

As a someone who watches people get married for a living, I think this is horrific! Why would we want to force people to get divorced?! I have heard the arguments about allowing gay couples to adopt (fears that they will “turn their kids gay” which has been debunked in many studies as well as a concern for the “instability” of the home life), and this is just stupid. If we want to give kids a stable home life, let their parents get married. And WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO LEAVE CHILDREN IN THE FOSTER SYSTEM WITH THE UPHEAVAL THAT PRODUCES WHEN THERE ARE PERFECTLY GOOD COUPLES WANTING TO ADOPT THEM?!?! Sorry for the yell, but it just kills me! Why do we insist on living in the dark ages. Gay people exist and they are just as nice and stable as straight people. Our kids and grandkids are going to really wonder at our sanity one day.

Proposal Portraits

aaf_0597Want to enter my contest buy can’t because you aren’t engaged yet? Not to worry! We have an exciting new concept. Proposal portraits! Yes, you heard me, we will photograph your proposal.  Of course, being the surprise fiend I am, I would hate to ruin that special moment, so we have a couple of different options.

First off, we can simply schedule a cute little couples portrait session with no ulterior motives beyond beautiful photos to share with your families (what a thoughtful birthday/ Mother’s Day/ Father’s Day/ July 4th/ National Ninja Day (December 5th)/ Christmas/ Chanukah/ Valentine’s Day gift). Until… WHAMMO! The moment is just right, you’ve both had such a good time, and you want to spend the rest of your lives together.

Want something a little more structured and even sneakier? We can plan a special date, during which time you have a photographer (moi) take a few shots in this lovely setting (by the lake, in the mountains, Market Square?). WHAMMO! It’s been such a perfect evening, why don’t you continue this thought for the rest of your lives.

aaf_0989OR if you really want to test our ninja stealth… With a bit of prior planning and a setting where a roving photographer isn’t completely out of place… Why, what a fun day we’re having at Ijams, Cades Cove, Dollywood, Paris France and WHAMMO! You are having such a great time together, why don’t you continue the fun for the rest of your lives. DOUBLE WHAMMO! Ninja stealth photographer leaps from the bushes to capture the gasp and giggles (and yes, we hope!)

Putting the FUN in funeral

Today was my mom’s dad’s funeral. He was 89 and very ill, so it was more a chance to see family than anything else. We had a great time. It was crazy. Who has fun at a funeral? The DuPree famijy, that’s who. Plus, the bereavement committee has some great chefs in the group! We all hurt ourselves on fried chicken, veggies, casseroles and fantastic pecan pie and key lime pie among other things. We got to see family members we hadn’t seen in far too long. There was a funeral and interment in the middle then it was back to family reun-ing. I was very surprised at how much fun we all had. Oh, and it was a navy funeral do we got to watch how they do all that. Every funeral should be this great!

Katie & Matt’s Album

Katie & Matt got married at the Church Street United Methodist Church, a beautiful church downtown, and had their reception at Club LeConte, where the food was great, the party was rockin’ and the view was incredible. Katie’s bridal portrait was at the Bleak House. Always in Bloom did a wonderful job with the flowers, and The White Table dressed everything up with their gorgeous linens. We finished their album recently, so I thought now would be a great time to post the design.
