Pictures from my yard

I must say, after deciding to focus more on gardening, I have been quite the slacker about posting yard pictures. Guess I’ll just have to live with the idea that my blog is going to be about a random variety of things I have photographed and prepped to post. As such, here are more pictures from my yard. Most of them having nothing to do with gardening and have more to do with the fact that we hate to mow and have loads of clover.

Knockout roses

Our knockout roses are fabulous! They came with the house and I haven’t cut them back other than to remove dead branches. I didn’t think I liked roses, but these always give such a fabulous showing.

Peonies

We have a beautiful peony bush (or whatever you call it) in our front bed. I love how one peony makes an impressive bouquet all by itself.

Lady bug on an apple leaf

This year I’ve noticed LOTS of ladybugs. Grand improvement over previous years where I couldn’t find any and had considered ordering some.

Baby apple

Our Granny Smith tree has loads of baby apples (well, maybe a dozen or so, but that’s way more than last year). Our Fuji tree sprouted several babies (you can see them in the gallery), but sadly they all fell off in the wind. Sigh.

Baby Peach

BABY PEACH!! I’m super excited about our peach tree with all of its super cute baby peaches. They’re fuzzy and rosy colored. I just love them. I can’t wait to EAT them! 😀

Clover Flowers

Clover flowers are BEAUTIFUL! These white ones are with the big clover and the yellow ones are with the little clover. I much prefer clover to grass. Too bad our neighbors disagree.

Red Leaf Japanese Maple

We bought a Lensbaby for our trip to India. Here I’m playing with it and shooting one of my favorite trees, the big Red Leaf Japanese Maple just outside our front door.

Yellow Clover Flowers

More yellow clover. Our yard was just full of tiny yellow flowers. Stupid conformity lawn mowing activities.

We have several unidentified bushes along the side of our house. They are tall and thing with tiny leaves and pretty white flowers that smell AMAZING in the spring. The rest of the year they fight with our back gate and we have to cut one of them back quite regularly.

Knockout roses

I can’t believe I thought about trying to dig up the rose bushes and giving them away. How dumb was that idea.

White Clover Flowers

More clover. Man I love that stuff. I’ve found about 4 4-leaf clovers this spring.

Blue bug with red stripes and a horn

I found this little guy when I was cutting oregano to dry. He had some friends also on our oregano. I have no idea what he is, but I asked the people at What’s That Bug and hope to hear back soon. In the gallery are a few more pictures of him as well as a sneaky spider.

So, yeah, that was a lot of pictures of my yard. Just know that there were many, many more that I edited out. I need to get back out there and photograph what our garden looks like now that the plants have really taken over. It’s a jungle out there! A hot, hot jungle.

Beth’s Bridal Portraits

Beth is so pretty!

Beth is my beautiful assistant, associate photographer and general sanity provider. We met through my awesome webhosting friend, Daniel with SlamDot. She was new to the area and looking to meet photographers. Why, that’s me! Turns out that she and her husband are like a younger version of Nathan and me. They’re both freelancers who are renovating the house they live in (insanity, I tell you!) and are super fun.

Beth got married last summer (and had sadly already booked a photographer before we met. Sigh. Her wedding looked awesome!) but didn’t have any traditional bridal portraits. This made her mom very sad. We can’t have that! So Beth broke out her dress from it’s Barbie-style preservation box and we set up a studio in my living room and had a great time! Here are a few of my favorite shots.

The traditional bridal portrait on black.

The much anticipated “traditional bridal portrait.”

RAWR!

RAWR! You’re a tiger!

Of course, we had to get some silly shots in too (two photographers couldn’t stay serious for long). Check out the gallery for more. We had a really great time and Beth’s mom was super happy (Beth was too). I’d call that a success!

And don’t forget to get in on our portrait sitting special!

Brittany & Kasey’s headshots

I met Brittany at the Derby Party we shot a few months ago. When she and her fellow awesome Realtor, Kasey, needed headshots, she knew just who to call. They had a few different needs for their shots, so we did some on a backdrop and some with the beautiful Tennessee River in the Sequoyah neighborhood in the background.

These ladies are super fun. We had a great time! Kasey brought her daughter who got to be my assistant (and boy was she helpful), holding a reflector. These are a few of the shots they chose.

And don’t forget our portrait special going on right now!

Puppy portraits

I’ve been showing lots of my portrait work lately. Could be because we’re running an awesome portrait special right now. But they’ve all been of newborns, babies, families or professionals and I know there are lots of people with four-legged babies feeling a bit left out. So here are some cute puppy portraits. They grow up so fast!

More Linda Shots

Hopefully you’ve picked up your July copy of Woman’s Day Magazine. Now for the rest of the story. We turned in the pictures from Friday’s blog and they loved it! But the sponsor thought the shot looked too professional. We weren’t sure what they meant by that, since Linda works in her shop, not in the dirt, and this is what she looks like. But, we wanted the sponsor to be happy, so we scheduled a new, more casual shoot.

Linda Parrent Master Florist

We sent these up and funny thing, they chose the original selections. But I think these shots turned out great too!

Now don’t forget that we’re doing the portrait special, so if you need shots for Woman’s Day or Everything Knoxville, give me a call!

Linda Parrent, you’re famous!

In March Nathan & I took an amazing trip to India (photos to come I PROMISE!). The day we left, I got a call from my dear friend Linda Parrent, owner of Elegant Essentials (in the Gallery Shopping Center) and Managing Director of Knoxville eWomen Network. She needed a headshot, STAT! But I was literally on my way to get on a plane and fly to India until the beginning of April. Luckily, Linda had a bit of time, but we planned to shoot the day after we got home. Of course, our plane was delayed in Abu Dhabi and we got home a day late. So what did I do? I drug my stuff home, repacked and headed to Linda’s shop. We were working on a deadline here! Not only did she need a new headshot for her eWomen Profile,

eWomen Network Headshot

she was also going to be featured in an upcoming Woman’s Day Magazine.

Not only is Linda a fabulous shop owner, she also does custom floral design. It was the floral design aspect that Woman’s Day wanted to feature. We went down to Pope’s Nursery on Northshore and completely rearranged their display. They were great! So helpful. Linda also wore a necklace by Brandy Becker with Compass Rose Jewelry.

Professional Portraits

She will be in the July issue of Woman’s Day. So be sure to get your copy! It’s available NOW!!

And be sure to catch our portrait special!

Fun Family Portraits

Joelle contacted me at the end of winter to plan a fun spring portrait with her husband and adorable son. We decided to try a new location out west with lots of variety.

Aiden was so well behaved,

but also easily distracted by the fish in the pond.

It was kind of a skinny path in some places.

We finished up with a nice walk through a field. What a great location, a perfect day and an amazingly awesome family! Thanks, for being such wonderful subjects!

The Amazing things you can do with Balloons

I have a friend, Dianna, who owns an event design business, Above the Rest. Sometimes Dianna calls me because she needs pictures. This is pretty standard for a photographer with friends and contacts in the event business. They design an event or do some awesome florals or some such thing and need pictures better than they can get from their point and shoot. What makes Dianna’s stuff really different, though, is she does it all with balloons. Balloons? Really? Yup. Balloons. And these aren’t your run of the mill balloons with a cartoon character on them. They also aren’t just a big bunch of balloons tied together with pretty string. These balloons rock. You’ll just have to see for yourself.

This was for a prom (with a Twilight theme, of course) at the Knoxville Expo Center. It’s always amazing to me how a bit of event design can take a blank canvas & make it so amazing! Great job, Dianna & team!

Looks like we made it!

Well, we thought we were going to be several days behind on our trip to LA, but nope! Insanity reigned supreme & we did a rotating driver situation that got us here in record time. Here’s the breakdown:

Last week/weekend, I busted out a bunch of shoots and got the shots online, plus updated my website. Then I slacked on cleaning the house and packed WAY last minute.

Nathan busted out about 100 t-shirts on our silk screen set up (both 2 color). It took forever b/c he also had to work out kinks and get the set up ready to go since we’re brand new at this.

Adam busted out 18 cajone (box drums) to sell and helped Nate on the t-shirt situation. He also attached a camper top onto his truck and built a bed extension, without which we would have never made it.

We’d planned to leave Saturday night. We didn’t. Instead we left at 6 a.m. Monday morning (after no sleep) and got as far as Cookeville where we crashed for 3-4 hours before getting up, getting the car repacked, dropping off dogs and hitting the road for Nashville.

Just imagine a German Shepherd & a Schnauzer in here and you have our trip from Knoxville to Cookeville.

Adam is showing off his fancy truck bed extension. We felt like the Clampetts driving into LA in a Tacoma with a wooden bed extension. It was AWESOME!

As you can see, we were packed to the gills. That box in the bottom right had our Nashville shirt order in it, so out it came and all of the crap in the backseat moved to the truck bed giving us the ability to do the full-on driver rotation with sleeping berth that allowed for a surprisingly comfortable nap (for 5’4″ me, that is. I can’t speak for Nathan or Adam)

In Nashville we dropped off 50 shirts (our first t-shirt sale) and re-repacked the car.

Our first silk screen t-shirt customers

2 color silk screen t-shirts

Then we stopped for a Mo’s burger and were on our way.

Welcome to Mo's? This one has burgers. Tasty, tasty burgers.

WELCOME TO MO’S! No, not that Moe’s. This Mo’s has burgers, gyros, corn dogs and delicious fries.

We had initially thought we might stop in Little Rock to stay with my friend Anthony, but since we were so far behind, we just kept going. That’s when we decided on the plan. There were 3 of us, so one would drive, one would keep the driver awake, one would sleep. Every 4-5 hours (or whenever the driver was done or the sleeper was up and ready) we’d switch. I got to sleep first (yay!). When it was my turn to drive, Nathan moved to sleeping & Adam was on wake up duty. Then I moved to wake up, Nathan drove and Adam slept. Then my turn again! After my second sleep cycle, I woke up just in time to see the sun rise.

Sunrise over Oklahama, I think.

By the time I was back up for the third time, we were in Texas at this amazing rest stop. The weather was AMAZING! The wind was insane. It was surreal and so beautiful. AND there was a road runner. It even ran across the parking lot which I thought was close enough to running across the road.

MEEP MEEP! It's a real live roadrunner (running across the road, even)

MEEP MEEP! That’s a road runner running across the parking lot. He was a speedy one. I didn’t have time to fetch my anvil.

The rest of Tuesday was pretty much as you would expect. Lots of random stuff. We had to stop for gas several times and there was something fun to see at a couple of the shops. I even photographed a few of those fun things.

Rawr. Yep, it's a life-sized teddy bear.

RAWR! Yep, thats a life-sized teddy bear ready to cuddle you to death (or slice your face off with its giant claws)

Ridiculous number of bikes on the back of a car. There were only 2 children in this car (one named Thor) and yet I counted at least 5 modes of transportation. Also, this gas station was charging $.75 more per gallon than any of the other stations we’d seen (except for the one across the street that was charging $.10 more than they were). Of course, the next station was about an hour down the road. Also, I think my dad and I ate at the restaurant you can see on the right-hand edge during our trip from Vegas to the Grand Canyon (which is a really long drive. Don’t let them tell you it’s a quick sightseeing trip you can easily make between visits to the casinos)

We also stopped at Stanley’s Petrified Wood shop which I photographed with the big camera, so you’ll just have to wait on those pictures. This is my iPhone blog today.

Sunset over ArizonaSomewhere in Arizona, the sun went down. Don’t worry, they didn’t stop us and demand to see our papers. But we were prepared.

We got into LA between 2 and 3 a.m. Pacific time. I think that’s the perfect time to arrive in LA. There was NO traffic. We just drove on in and got to Patrick & Amy’s without incident. It was an insane trip. With stops and everything, I think we were “on the road” for 48 straight hours. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this as a regular, everyday activity. But a full-on, non-stop cross country trip is an amazingly trippy experience that I think everyone should have at least once in their lives. Now we’ve done it and the trip home will be at a much less breakneck speed. We might even stop and check out the scenery.

Thank Yous that make running a business worth it

Running a photography business is not all fun and games. Sure we get to go to parties and photograph people looking beautiful and having a great time, but we’re not completely immune to the stress (despite the 100% cool and calm demeanor we’re known for during the crazy times). And photographing families and babies is great, but we’ve had sessions that are 95% screaming toddler-time. We still get great shots (and plenty for payback starting around age 12. MWAHAHAHAHAHA! You’re welcome, parents). So those thank you notes afterwards are really appreciated.

Mostly the thank yous mention our calm, friendly manner and the professionalism of our team. We work hard to make sure we not only add zero stress, but take away as much stress as we can. Even a simple portrait sitting is stressful to parents who just spent the last two hours combing hair and wiping jelly off of faces just to come back from getting themselves ready to find chocolate has materialized from nowhere all over those cute overalls bought special for the shoot.

Then the notes go on to talk about how much they love the pictures, which really boosts our egos and helps us continue on during the shoots where the rain just won’t let up or that cute overall set had to be changed last minute for a slightly less loved outfit from the closet. We’re glad to know that we have not only provided amazing shots during perfect sessions with amazing weather and gorgeous lighting, but also taken what our clients may have initially thought of as lemons and made lemonade, lemon tarts, lemon meringue pie all better than what they had initially anticipated with a perfect shoot.

They close with a big thank you and intentions to book another shoot in the future and/or refer friends and family. We really appreciate that. Great clients are our lifeblood, so working with you again and again is wonderful! I love my job and it’s great to know that my clients love the way I do it.

Of course, then there are the thank yous that leave me all weepy-eyed and goose bumpy. I don’t get them often, thankfully, because they’re those heart-strings yanking notes with a sad twinge that really hits home the idea that we aren’t just making images, we’re making memories and heirlooms.

Many of those notes come from sessions I have done with Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, an amazing organization of photographers providing sessions for terminally ill and stillborn babies and children. Every session is amazing and heart-wrenching. The thank you notes I receive from the families are so heartfelt, I just sit sobbing afterwards (yes, I’m a crier, but some of these families would not have pictures of their babies without NILMDTS).

Then there are the very surprising thank yous I receive from guests at weddings. They are some of the most touching because we are simply there to shoot the event and capture everyone. It’s what we do, and sometimes we take for granted that that’s the way the world works. I wanted to share a note that I received from a guest that really made me glad for my job:

Dear Claire,

I wanted to let you know how very special a picture you took of my dad at R_’s wedding is to my family. The January after the wedding, my dad passed away. When we saw the picture you took of him, it was such a blessing. You caught him at a moment that showed very naturally his enjoyment of time with family. The crispness of his photo is almost lifelike. I look at it every day and feel a connection. It is definitely the best picture we have of him in his later years. And the picture became an important part of my grieving and healing time. And now with a baby almost here, I’ll have the picture to show him/her a piece of their grandpa’s life.

One never knows in life the moment they may be touching the lives of others in a profound way.

Thank you!

M_

While I work closely with my clients and their immediate families, I never really meet most wedding guests and never get to see their reactions as they view the images online. I have no idea which image becomes such an important part of their lives. They place orders and we fill them, sending our work out into the world with the knowledge that they will be enjoyed and the hope that they don’t become lost in a box years down the road. It’s nice to know that something I created has had such a profound impact and reminds us all that every guest is important.
